Ray Lipscombe, from Alsco’s Melbourne branch, has found a great way to support a worthwhile cause. He writes:

“I have always enjoyed riding a bike, however about eight years ago I realised I wasn’t getting any younger, so I decided to give myself a few challenges. I started to do a few long rides, however after a few years I thought I needed a bigger challenge and came up with the idea of riding from Sydney to Melbourne.

As a Rotarian I looked at how this ride may be of benefit to our community. One of my Rotarian friends who I asked to be part of my support crew for the six day ride suggested making it a fundraiser for cancer research.

I plan to ride this event for 10 years and believe that over this time we should be able to build a following and establish the event as part of the Rotary district 9800 calendar.

Our objective is to raise $300.000.00 over the 10 years. 70 percent of the money is going to the three cancer projects with the 30 percent balance to be used in our local area for youth projects.

Alsco Head Office has supported us for the first three years and we hope they will for the next seven as we build up the event.

All the riders and support crew paid their own costs which meant all the funds go to the projects. This year the ride cost us about $420.00. At night we stayed in cabins and were fed by various Rotary clubs along the way. The support crew made breakfast and lunch for the riders.

One of the riders was an Alsco customer, Stephen Tippitt, Catering Manager at St Vincents Hospital Melbourne. Another customer, Harry Hunt, (Hunts Comfort Inn at Casula) provided some free and ‘at cost’ accommodation.”
