Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Your heart is one of the most important muscles

Your heart is one of the most important muscles as it pumps blood all around your body. This blood is full of oxygen, which is needed by every cell in your body.

Know the facts. Here are some chilling truths about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the #1 killer in Australia

9 out of 10 people will not survive an out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest.

If a Sudden Cardiac Arrest is not treated properly and quickly, it can cause sudden death within 10 minutes

For every minute that passes without defibrillation after the start of a SCA, chances of survival are reduced by 10%

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms that can cause a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. An AED might be able to treat these abnormal heart rhythms by giving an electric shock to try to restart the heart’s normal rhythm. This is known as defibrillation.

If someone is having a cardiac arrest, they will not be conscious or breathing normally. They need immediate help by calling Triple Zero (000), starting CPR, and using a defibrillator (AED).

Why is an AED important?

AEDs are important because they substantially increase the patient’s chance of survival during a cardiac episode.

When a person suffers from sudden cardiac arrest, their chance of survival decreases by 7-10% for each minute that passes without defibrillation. Additionally, when deployed within 3 minutes, defibrillators can increase a person’s survival rate by a cardiac arrest from 6% to 74% if the casualty is in a shockable rhythm.

There’s no doubt that AEDs can deliver a life-saving electric shock, which often means the difference between life or death.
